Queery News this week

BIG GAY NEWS 02/18/2009

GOVERNOR JIM DOYLE LAID OUT HIS BIENNIAL PROPOSED BUDGET LAST NIGHT AND ALTHOUGH MUCH IS BEING SAID ABOUT CLOSING SERVICES AND TAXING THE WEALTHIEST WISCONSIN PEOPLE. SOMETHING THAT ISN’T GETTING MUCH ATTENTION IS HIS INCLUSION OF LIMITED DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP PROTECTIONS FOR THE WISCONSIN’S SAME-SEX.
THE PROPOSED DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS WILL GRANT BASIC PROTECTIONS TO SAME-SEX COUPLES IN CARING, COMMITTED RELATIONSHIPS, INCLUDING HOSPITAL VISITATION AND THE ABILITY TO TAKE FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE TO CARE FOR A SICK PARTNER.
FAIR WISCONSIN, AND SEVERAL LGBT ADVOCACY AND SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS THANKED GOVERNOR. A POLL CONDUCTED IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR SUGGESTS THAT THREE-QUARTERS OF LIKELY WISCONSIN VOTERS SUPPORT SOME FORM OF LEGAL RECOGNITION FOR GAY AND LESBIAN COUPLES.
IN HIS ADDRESS DOYLE SAID THIS…..QUOTE "IF WE WANT OUR ECONOMY TO FLOURISH - IF WE WANT TO HELP ATTRACT AND RETAIN TALENTED WORKERS - IT IS ALSO TIME TO MAKE SURE OUR STATE TAKES SOME BASIC STEPS TOWARD FAIRNESS AND DECENCY. FIRST, WE CAN MAKE SURE THAT DOMESTIC PARTNERS WHO WORK FOR THE STATE HAVE ACCESS TO BENEFITS. WE CAN ALSO MAKE SURE THAT A COMMITTED COUPLE HAS VISITATION RIGHTS AT A HOSPITAL, AND THE RIGHT TO TAKE THE APPROPRIATE LEAVE IF ONE HAS A SERIOUS ILLNESS." (END QUOTE).

A WISCONSIN WOMAN IS SUING THE THE FOND DU LAC REGIONAL HOSPITAL BECAUSE SHE WAS DENIED SURGERY TO REMOVE HER GALLBLADDER BECAUSE SHE HAS HIV.
LAMBDA LEGAL AND THE AIDS RESOURCE CENTER OF WISCONSIN (ARCW) FILED A FEDERAL LAWSUIT FEBRUARY 12 ON BEHALF OF MELODY ROSE, A 35-YEAR-OLD WISCONSIN WOMAN INCARCERATED AT TAYCHEEDAH CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION IN FOND DU LAC
AN ATTORNEY WITH LAMBDA LEGAL'S HIV PROJECT TEAM SAID THAT DISCRIMINATION IN HEALTHCARE REMAINS A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV AND THAT DR. CAHEE'S ACTIONS FLY IN THE FACE OF ETHICAL BEHAVIOR FOR A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL,"

IN POLITICAL NEWS….. NORTH MIAMI MAYOR KEVIN BURNS, WHO IS THE CITY'S FIRST OPENLY GAY MAYOR, IS MAKING A BID FOR THE U.S. SENATE SEAT OCCUPIED BY REPUBLICAN MEL MARTINEZ, WHO WILL LEAVE NEXT YEAR. BURNS, IS BEING FORCED OUT OF THE MAYOR POSITION BY TERM LIMITS IN MAY. IF ELECTED TO THE SENATE, HE’D BE THE FIRST OPENLY GAY U.S. SENATOR.

A SMALL GROUP OF PROTESTERS ADVOCATING THE LEGALIZATION OF GAY MARRIAGE IN CHINA TURNED HEADS IN BEIJING, ON VALENTINE’S DAY. TWO MEN AND TWO WOMEN GAY COUPLES POSED FOR WEDDING PHOTOS ALONG THE MAIN DRAG OF QIANMEN AVENUE, A BUSY SHOPPING DISTRICT IN BEIJING GATHERING LARGE CROWDS OF ONLOOKERS AND PEOPLE ASKING QUESTIONS – WHICH PROMPTED MIXED REACTIONS.
WHILE MANY ONLOOKERS EXPRESSED SUPPORT, SAYING THEY WERE AWARE THERE ARE MANY OPENLY GAY MEN AND WOMEN IN CHINA, OTHERS WERE NOT SYMPATHETIC TO THE CAUSE. BUT NO ONE, INCLUDING THE GUARDS IN THE AREA ON SATURDAY, TRIED TO STOP THE GROUP FROM ITS DEMONSTRATION.

AND IN NOT SUCH GREAT NEWS. THE UPDATE ON WORT'S WINTER ON-AIR DRIVE...IS NOT LOOKING SO WELL. ON MONDAY, AT THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK OF THE DRIVE, WE HAD PLEDGES AT ABOUT $12,000 SHORT OF OUR GOAL OF $55,000 FOR THE WEEK. UNLESS WE CAN REVERSE THIS TREND DURING THESE REMAINING 5 DAYS OF THE DRIVE, WE ARE LIKELY TO FINISH THE DRIVE IN EXCESS OF A $24,000 SHORTFALL! BUT…..THERE IS STILL HOPE. YOU CAN HELP – BY CALLING AND MAKING A PLEDGE AT 256.2001 AND LETTING ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY KNOW TO CALL IN TO SUPPORT WORT AS WELL. WORT’S BEEN AROUND FOR 33 YEARS, AND QUEERY’S BEEN AROUND FOR 12 OF THOSE YEARS AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE HERE….BUT ONLY WITH YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT.

AND THAT’S ALL FOR THE NEWS THIS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 18, 2009.
